Bio
GENERAL
Confusion Field is a progressive rock project from Finland, founded in 2017 by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tomi Kankainen. Blending elements of progressive rock, pop and metal, Confusion Field pairs atmospheric keyboard textures with downtuned heaviness and modern production, while reflective lyrics add a distinctly northern melancholy. Intricate arrangements coexist with memorable melodies, giving Confusion Field a sound that is both progressive and accessible.
The debut album Disconnection Complete was released in 2021, followed by Future Impact of Past Diversions in 2023. The third album, Resilience Remains, will be released in September 2026.
HISTORY
Tomi Kankainen's musical journey began in the late 1980s as a bassist in local metal bands. Throughout the following decades, the music evolved in an increasingly progressive direction as projects came and went, covering everything from melodic pop to death metal. By the 2010s, the focus shifted from bands to writing and recording independently.
That creative freedom ultimately became Confusion Field in 2017, when a new collection of songs naturally took on a progressive identity. Kankainen recorded the debut album largely on his own, joined by longtime collaborators Petri Honkonen on drums and Markus Jämsen on lead guitars. The same approach continued on the second album.
For Resilience Remains, the recording process changed slightly: acclaimed drummer Martino Malacrida performed the drum tracks while Kankainen handled all other instruments, vocals and songwriting. Confusion Field remains a studio project, focusing entirely on creating ambitious and uncompromising music rather than performing live.
